Little Rock, Arkansas – Former Arkansas Razorbacks standout Hagen Smith made an immediate impression in his Major League Baseball debut Sunday, helping the Chicago White Sox secure a 5-3 victory over the Cleveland Guardians.
Smith, a left-handed pitcher and the No. 5 overall selection in the 2024 MLB Draft, earned the win after entering the game following a lengthy rain delay. Despite the unusual circumstances surrounding his first appearance in the majors, the former Razorback looked comfortable on the mound.
The 23-year-old worked two scoreless innings and finished the outing with three strikeouts. His first inning could hardly have gone better. Smith struck out all three batters he faced, quickly showing the same ability to miss bats that made him one of the most highly regarded pitching prospects in baseball.
His second inning presented a much tougher challenge.
Smith found himself dealing with the bases loaded, putting his debut in danger of taking a very different turn. Instead, he managed to escape the jam without allowing a run. The left-hander kept Cleveland off the scoreboard and gave Chicago an important boost as the White Sox held on for the series victory.

For Smith, the performance marked the latest step in a rapid rise from college baseball to the highest level of the sport.
The White Sox promoted him to the majors Saturday after he spent the season pitching for the Charlotte Knights. Before receiving the call, Smith had established himself as one of Chicago’s top young players. MLB Pipeline ranked him as the White Sox’s No. 2 prospect and the No. 51 overall prospect in baseball.
His debut also offered a glimpse of why Chicago selected him so high in the 2024 draft.
Smith arrived in professional baseball after a standout career with the Arkansas Razorbacks. The Bullard, Texas, native played for Arkansas from 2022 through 2024 and developed into one of the country’s most talented pitchers during his college career.
During his time in Fayetteville, Smith became known for his overpowering pitching and ability to generate strikeouts. Those qualities were on display immediately Sunday, even with the pressure and attention that came with his first major league appearance.
The former Razorback’s promotion had already been a significant moment for Arkansas fans. His performance against Cleveland made it even more memorable.

Smith entered the majors as one of the White Sox’s most closely watched prospects, but he did not look overwhelmed by the moment. Two scoreless innings, three strikeouts and a win gave him a strong start to his professional career at the game’s highest level.
There will be plenty more challenges ahead as Smith adjusts to major league hitters and the demands of a full season. For now, though, his first outing gave Chicago another reason to be encouraged about one of the organization’s young pitchers.
For Arkansas, it was another reminder of the talent that has moved from Baum-Walker Stadium to the major leagues. Smith’s first appearance ended with a win, and his first three strikeouts provided an early indication of what he may bring to the White Sox.
