According to the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, Capt. Chris Kelley was working on his farm when the explosion occurred. Capt. Kelley was a long-serving member of the local law enforcement community and held a respected position not only within the Centerton Police Department but also with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office, where he worked as a reserve lieutenant. His career in public service spanned many years, during which he was widely recognized for his leadership and dedication.

Following his death, the Benton County Sheriff’s Office released a statement reflecting on his life and service, emphasizing the impact he had on colleagues, friends, and the community he served.

“Our law enforcement family is mourning the loss of a truly remarkable man,” the Benton County Sheriff’s Office stated. “After many years of dedicated service, Chris leaves behind a legacy defined by leadership, integrity, and selfless service. He was more than a badge and a uniform—he was a respected leader, trusted mentor, loyal friend, devoted husband, and dedicated public servant. His kindness, wisdom, and unwavering commitment to helping others made a lasting impact on countless lives.”

The statement also extended condolences to Kelley’s family, friends, and fellow officers, asking the community to keep them in their thoughts during this difficult time. The loss has been described as deeply felt across multiple agencies and among those who worked closely with him.

Centerton Mayor Bill Edwards also shared his reaction in a public Facebook post, calling Kelley’s passing “a tremendous loss” for both the law enforcement profession and the community. Edwards described him as a “role model” and a “source of strength” within the Centerton Police Department and beyond.

“While words cannot adequately express the sorry felt by so many, his legacy of service, leadership, and dedication will continue to inspire future generations,” Edwards said in the post. “Rest easy, Captain Kelley. Thank you for your service, your leadership, and your unwavering commitment to others. Your watch has ended, but your legacy will never be forgotten.”

As the investigation continues, officials have not yet indicated whether foul play is suspected or if the explosion was purely accidental. For now, authorities are focused on determining the cause while the community comes together to honor a man widely remembered for his commitment to public service.

The sudden loss has left a noticeable void in the local law enforcement community, where Capt. Kelley was regarded not only as an officer but also as a mentor and leader who shaped the careers of many around him.
