Manila fifth grader wins Lovis Extraordinary Student Award

Little Rock, Arkansas – In a small school community in northeastern Arkansas, a young student is gaining attention not for grades or test scores, but for the way he treats people around him. A fifth grader from Manila has been named the 2026 recipient of the Lovis Extraordinary Student Award, a recognition that highlights character, kindness, and impact far beyond the classroom.

The award went to Braxton Wood, a student from Manila, Arkansas, who was chosen for the way he consistently shows compassion and leadership in everyday life. Unlike traditional academic honors, this award focuses on students who are making a difference in their communities through empathy, courage, and personal strength rather than grades alone.

The Lovis Extraordinary Student Award is known for recognizing young people who may be facing difficult circumstances such as disabilities, bullying, loss, mental health challenges, poverty, or family hardships. It aims to shine a light on students whose struggles are often unseen, yet who continue to show resilience and positivity in how they treat others and engage with the world around them.

Braxton’s story stood out because of how naturally he brings positivity into his environment. Teachers and peers describe him as someone who lifts others up without being asked, often going out of his way to make classmates feel included and valued. His actions, though simple at times, have created a strong impression in his school community, where kindness can sometimes go unnoticed in the rush of daily life.

What makes his recognition even more meaningful is how he has responded to personal challenges. Rather than allowing difficulties to define him, Braxton has focused on building a sense of purpose through kindness and involvement. He is known for consistently showing courage in how he approaches obstacles, choosing to support others even when facing his own struggles.

Beyond the classroom, Braxton has also taken part in efforts to support the Special Olympics Special Olympics, an organization he not only supports but actively participates in. He has helped raise money for its programs, showing a level of dedication that is uncommon for someone his age. His involvement reflects a belief that small actions can still make a meaningful difference.

Community members say his work with Special Olympics also highlights his understanding of inclusion. By participating and helping raise funds, he has contributed to opportunities for athletes with disabilities, while also learning lessons about teamwork, respect, and determination.

As Braxton Wood receives this year’s Lovis Extraordinary Student Award, his recognition serves as a reminder that impact is not always measured in numbers or academic performance. Sometimes, it is found in simple acts of kindness, steady encouragement, and the quiet decision to care about others every day.
