Garland County, Arkansas – A Wednesday afternoon shooting in Garland County has left one man dead and another now facing a serious felony charge, according to local authorities who say the investigation is still active and developing.
The incident happened in the early part of the afternoon, when the Garland County Sheriff’s Office received urgent reports of gunfire in the 100 block of Copper Penny Trail. Deputies were sent to the scene at around 12:48 p.m., responding quickly to what callers described as a dangerous and active situation.
When officers arrived, they found a man lying unresponsive in the yard of a residence. The scene was already tense, with multiple people present as deputies began securing the area. Emergency responders immediately attempted life-saving measures, working against the clock in hopes of saving the victim’s life. Despite those efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim. What is known is that the situation escalated quickly and ended in a fatal outcome in a quiet residential area, leaving investigators with many unanswered questions in the hours that followed.
As deputies worked the scene, three individuals were detained for questioning. Investigators later identified one of them as 43-year-old Matthew Hartman. Officials said Hartman was interviewed by detectives as part of the initial investigation process while they tried to determine what led up to the shooting.
After those interviews were completed, authorities said Hartman was taken into custody. He was later booked into the Garland County Detention Center, where he is now being held on a charge of second-degree murder. Officials also confirmed that his bond has been set at $150,000.

The case has not yet been fully explained by investigators, and officials have not released details about a possible motive or the relationship between those involved. The presence of multiple detained individuals at the scene suggests that detectives are still working through conflicting accounts and gathering additional statements.
Even now, authorities say the investigation remains ongoing. Evidence collection, interviews, and follow-up work are expected to continue as detectives try to piece together exactly how the deadly confrontation unfolded in broad daylight.
