A tragic crash in Avoca kills a couple and Governor Sanders comments on the arrest of the driver responsible

Avoca, Arkansas – A tragic crash near Avoca on March 26 claimed the lives of a local couple, leaving the community shaken and raising questions about road safety and law enforcement. The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on U.S. Highway 62 at Russell Road when a 2001 Chevy Tahoe, driven by 45-year-old Jose Luis Gamez, turned into the path of an oncoming 1989 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

The collision resulted in the deaths of the motorcycle’s driver, 70-year-old Michael Cordes, and passenger, 67-year-old Freda Cordes, both residents of Rogers, according to Arkansas State Police (ASP). The crash was reported under clear skies and dry road conditions, with no other vehicles involved or injuries reported.

Gamez, the driver of the Chevy, was arrested following the incident and faces two counts of negligent homicide, one count of first-offense DWI, and one count of improper entry or exit at an intersection. Authorities also revealed that Gamez has an active nationwide felony warrant from Los Angeles County, California. Bond for one negligent homicide charge was set at $500,000, with cash or surety required for the remaining charges. Additionally, Gamez is being held for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ASP has not released further details regarding the California warrant.

Following the arrest, Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders released a statement emphasizing public safety and the role of immigration enforcement. “Every day that Senate Democrats delay funding for DHS is another day that immigration officials cannot operate at full capacity and apprehend the violent, criminal illegals hurting our communities. I’m grateful to Arkansas State Police for arresting this criminal and thankful that President Trump is working quickly to deport violent, criminal illegals. This is why I signed the Defense Against Criminal Illegals Act last year: to get these violent offenders off our streets and out of our country,” Governor Sanders said.

The fatal crash has prompted a wave of support for the Cordes family in Rogers. The Northwest Arkansas Humane Society for Animals noted that the couple owned several dogs and is seeking help to identify them and find new homes for the animals. The society has asked anyone with information or an interest in adoption to reach out to assist in rehoming the pets.

The community has expressed both shock and sorrow over the loss of the couple, describing Michael and Freda Cordes as active members of their neighborhood and devoted to their family and pets. Residents have come together to support those affected, highlighting the human toll that road tragedies can have beyond the immediate victims.

Authorities conducted a thorough investigation at the scene, including a Standardized Field Sobriety Test and blood draw for Gamez, which indicated he was driving under the influence. Video evidence obtained during the investigation showed Gamez failing to yield to oncoming traffic, directly causing the collision. These findings were pivotal in determining the charges filed against him.

The case underscores broader concerns about road safety, drunk driving, and the intersection of criminal justice and immigration enforcement. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance on roadways, particularly in areas with heavy traffic or complex intersections.

The Cordes family tragedy, combined with the legal and political attention surrounding Gamez’s arrest, has drawn widespread local and state interest. Officials are continuing to investigate the crash, ensure appropriate legal proceedings, and provide support to the victims’ loved ones.

As the community mourns, residents are encouraged to remain alert on Arkansas roads and to support local law enforcement efforts in preventing future tragedies. The Northwest Arkansas Humane Society continues its outreach to ensure the Cordes’ dogs are safely rehomed, providing a small measure of care and continuity amid the loss.

This heartbreaking event has left a lasting impact on the Avoca area, highlighting the human and societal costs of negligent driving while reinforcing the roles of law enforcement and community support in times of crisis.
