Newport, Arkansas – Arkansas State University–Newport announced a significant change to its athletics lineup this week, confirming that two long-standing sports programs will be discontinued at the end of the current academic cycle. The decision affects the university’s women’s softball and men’s basketball programs and will take effect on July 1, 2026.

Interim Chancellor Ike Wheeler shared the announcement Tuesday, saying the move follows an extensive internal review. According to Wheeler, university leadership spent months evaluating the long-term sustainability of the programs before reaching a conclusion. “A great deal of research into costs, time involvements, human capital as well as the future of these programs on our campuses” guided the final decision, he said.

University officials emphasized that the change was not made lightly. Both programs have been a visible part of campus life, drawing student participation and community support over the years. However, administrators determined that continuing the programs would place increasing strain on university resources at a time when broader institutional priorities must take precedence.

ASU-Newport also addressed the impact on current student athletes. The university plans to offer first-year student athletes academic scholarship opportunities for their second year, aiming to help them continue their education despite the athletic changes. Officials said the goal is to minimize disruption and ensure students remain supported academically as the programs wind down.

Wheeler acknowledged the many individuals who contributed to the success of the teams, expressing gratitude for years of dedication and support. “From coaches and assistant coaches to volunteers to the numerous fans and donors who have shown their support, we thank you,” he said.

The announcement has prompted mixed reactions across campus and within the local community. For some, the programs represented more than competition, serving as a source of school pride and connection. For others, the decision reflects broader challenges facing smaller institutions as they balance budgets, enrollment goals and academic investments.

University leaders noted that while the discontinuation marks the end of an era for ASU-Newport athletics, it also opens the door for a renewed focus on academic growth and student success. Officials said additional information will be shared with students, staff and families as the transition period continues ahead of the July 2026 deadline.

For now, the university says it remains committed to supporting affected students and honoring the legacy of the teams as they compete through their final seasons.
