Jonesboro City Council approves application for US Justice Department grant to provide new bulletproof vests for police officers

Jonesboro, Arkansas – Jonesboro police officers could soon be hitting the streets with upgraded protection after the City Council approved a resolution Tuesday to apply for a U.S. Department of Justice grant aimed at providing bulletproof vests. The grant, part of the Justice Department’s Bulletproof Vest Partnership program, is designed to help law enforcement agencies purchase personal protective equipment to keep officers safe while on duty.

Under the terms of the grant, the federal government would cover $42,000 of the total cost, while the Jonesboro Police Department will provide a required local match of $49,560. The combined funds are expected to purchase 42 new bulletproof vests, giving officers a much-needed boost in protection as they carry out daily patrols and respond to emergencies.

“This grant will allow our officers to have some of the best protective equipment available, and we are grateful for federal support,” said a Jonesboro Police Department spokesperson. The grant program requires a 50% local match, which ensures that cities like Jonesboro remain invested in the safety and effectiveness of their law enforcement personnel.

City officials noted that the process to secure the funding will include submitting an application detailing the department’s needs and plans for the vests. If approved, the program will provide not only financial assistance but also a pathway for Jonesboro to maintain and replace critical protective gear as necessary.

The initiative comes at a time when law enforcement agencies across the country continue to face heightened risks on the job. By securing these funds, Jonesboro aims to enhance officer safety while demonstrating a commitment to proactive community policing.

Once approved, the vests will be distributed to officers throughout the department, providing essential protection during both routine patrols and high-risk situations. The City Council’s resolution reflects a broader effort to ensure that local law enforcement has access to modern tools and equipment to serve the community safely and effectively.

With this step, Jonesboro joins numerous municipalities nationwide that take advantage of the Bulletproof Vest Partnership program to support the safety and readiness of officers on the front lines.
