Central Arkansas Library System announces new reopening date for main branch after construction delays

Little Rock, Arkansas – Residents eager to step inside the newly renovated main branch of the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) will have to wait a little longer. Library officials announced this week that the grand reopening, initially planned for September 20, has been delayed. The CALS Main Library is now scheduled to open its doors on Monday, September 29, with a larger celebration planned for Saturday, October 4.

The grand reopening event promises a festive atmosphere, featuring games, crafts, food trucks, and live music. Attendees will also have the chance to enjoy the return of the popular Six Bridges Book Festival, a highlight for local book lovers. Officials hope the celebration will give the community an opportunity to explore the library’s many new offerings and enjoy a day of family-friendly activities.

The main branch of CALS has been closed to the public since September 2023, as construction crews worked on a significant overhaul that is continuing into 2025. The renovations bring a host of modern amenities designed to appeal to a wide range of visitors. Among the new additions are a video production studio, rooms specifically for podcasting, teaching kitchens, and a rooftop patio, giving the library a fresh and contemporary look. These upgrades aim to transform the space into more than just a place to borrow books, positioning it as a community hub for learning, creativity, and connection.

Library officials said the delay was necessary to ensure that everything is fully prepared for public use. By shifting the opening date, they hope to guarantee that the facilities are ready and that visitors can fully enjoy all the improvements without compromise.

Mayor Frank Scott, Jr., along with other local leaders, is expected to attend the reopening celebration, emphasizing the library’s role in supporting education and community engagement. Residents are encouraged to plan their visit for the grand reopening and take part in the festivities designed to highlight the library’s transformation.
