Little Rock, Arkansas – In the wake of powerful storms and tornadoes that ripped through Arkansas on March 14 and 15, help is arriving from both the federal and state level as efforts ramp up to support the long recovery process. With President Donald Trump issuing a Major Disaster Declaration and promising Individual Assistance to residents affected by the destruction, the State of Arkansas is now stepping in with added support for local governments that took the brunt of the cleanup burden.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced that the state will now provide Public Assistance funding to counties and municipalities, offering financial relief for communities stretched thin in the aftermath of the storms. The announcement marks a significant step in Arkansas’ recovery path, aimed at easing the financial strain on local governments struggling to recover.
“Arkansas is grateful for President Trump’s support as we continue to rebuild from this spring’s devastating tornadoes,” said Governor Sanders. “The State of Arkansas is going to step up to give additional assistance to our counties and cities to help pay for some of the costs incurred during storm cleanup efforts.”

The Arkansas Division of Emergency Management (ADEM) is taking the lead on coordinating these recovery projects. Staff from ADEM’s Public Assistance division, along with regional Area Coordinators, will work closely with affected counties and towns to manage the aid process. The effort will rely on the damage assessments already submitted by the state to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), ensuring that aid is directed where it’s needed most.
Once local governments finish their storm-related work—such as clearing debris, restoring damaged public facilities, and rebuilding infrastructure—they will send expense documentation to ADEM. The agency will review the costs and verify that the work meets the necessary criteria. After that, the state will reimburse 35% of the eligible expenses, helping communities recoup a significant portion of their investments in the rebuilding effort.
This combined federal and state response offers a crucial lifeline to Arkansas towns still reeling from the storms’ impact. Roads, public buildings, and utility systems across multiple counties suffered extensive damage, and local leaders have voiced concern over the immense financial toll cleanup has taken on their already tight budgets.
The disaster declaration and ensuing assistance represent a coordinated effort to get Arkansas communities back on their feet as quickly and safely as possible. As the weeks progress, state and local officials are expected to remain in close communication to ensure that all available resources reach the families and neighborhoods that need them most.
