Central Arkansas communities gather to honor lives lost and support survivors after tragic Conway park shooting

Conway, Arkansas – Central Arkansas residents are stepping forward in solidarity and mourning following a tragic shooting that took two young lives and left several others wounded. The violence unfolded on April 13 at 5th Avenue Park in Conway, where gunfire erupted during a gathering, shattering the peace of a spring weekend.

The lives of 24-year-old Tatayana Penister and 23-year-old Demetrius Feemster were cut short in the incident, which also left nine others injured. One of the victims remains in serious condition as the community continues to process the devastating aftermath.

To honor the victims and support the healing process, several local organizations are planning gatherings focused on unity and prayer. A pop-up community prayer event is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, in Little Rock at 900 South Pine Street. This event is being organized by the Awareness Center and Lakiesha Braggs Ministries.

Meanwhile, the NAACP Faulkner County Branch is arranging a candlelight vigil for 6 p.m. on Monday, April 21, back at the site of the shooting — 5th Avenue Park at 573 5th Avenue in Conway. These events aim to offer a space for reflection, remembrance, and community support.

Despite the public outcry and growing concern, no arrests have been made in connection to the shooting. Local authorities have, however, provided some hope that progress is being made.

Conway Mayor Bart Castleberry and Police Chief Chris Harris addressed the public, stating that investigators have leads in the case. “We are actively working this investigation and following up on information as it becomes available,” officials emphasized during the update.

As the search for answers continues, emotions are running high throughout the region. While the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, the sense of urgency for justice is shared widely across central Arkansas.

For now, the community turns to faith, remembrance, and each other — hoping that healing and justice will follow soon.
