Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office issues warning about toll scam texts

Jefferson County, Arkansas – The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) is alerting the public about a concerning text scam that has recently been reported by local residents. The scam involves a fraudulent message claiming to be from a toll authority, alleging that the recipient’s vehicle was involved in a toll evasion incident.

The scam text reads:

“The Toll Roads Notice of Toll Evasion:
Our records show that your vehicle has been involved in a toll evasion incident. This is a violation of the toll payment regulations and may result in additional penalties, including fines and suspension of access to toll roads.
To avoid further action, please settle the toll payment within 12 hours. Failure to pay within the specified time will result in increased fines and may be reported to the DMV.
We urge you to make the necessary payment promptly to avoid any complications.”

The message then directs recipients to click on a suspicious link, which promises to help settle the toll violation. However, the JCSO is emphasizing that this message is a scam designed to trick people into sharing their personal and financial information. The scammer provides a link that leads to an unsafe website, and advises recipients to respond by following a series of confusing instructions to activate the link.

The Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens that the state of Arkansas does not have any toll roads. Furthermore, the tone of the message is vague, and it appears to be specifically targeted toward residents of Texas, referencing the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT). TXDOT has already confirmed that the messages are fraudulent and not affiliated with any legitimate toll enforcement.

JCSO is urging residents who receive this text message to delete it immediately. They also recommend reporting the scam to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (www.ic3.gov), which tracks and investigates cyber crimes. Scammers are known to use these deceptive tactics to prey on unsuspecting individuals, and JCSO wants to ensure that no one falls victim to this type of fraud.

“This type of scam is becoming more common, and we want to make sure our community is informed and aware,” said a spokesperson for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. “It’s important to stay vigilant and never click on suspicious links or respond to unsolicited messages asking for payment.”

The JCSO continues to encourage citizens to stay cautious when receiving unsolicited messages and to verify any claims made in such communications. If you suspect a scam or are unsure of the legitimacy of a message, it’s always a good idea to double-check with official authorities before taking any action.
