The winner of Gr. 8 Acts of Kindness finds a musical purpose

Paragould, Arkansas – As you enter the Chateau on the Ridge, the sound of music resonates from down the hall.

It’s a Friday afternoon. Dennis Ellington and his band are once again bringing their signature energy, infusing life with a touch of positivity.

“It gives you a sense of freedom, and you can’t help but feel happy,” said Jolene Hufford, a resident of Chateau on the Ridge. “I’m feeling really great.”

“We are familiar with some of these individuals.” Dennis Ellington, the November Gr8 Acts of Kindness winner, shared, “I worked with Jolene Hufford at the hospital for many years.”

The concept of entertaining seniors originated before this point. It was definitely a more intimate experience.

Verbadean “Sissy” Ellington, the mother of Ellington, resides at Sunshine Manor.

“When Covid struck, attendance dropped significantly. We went out there on a Thursday morning, and the atmosphere was somber, with everyone just [hanging their heads and not talking]. “It felt sorrowful, just still and disheartening,” Ellington remarked.

Ellington took some time for introspection, reached out to his friends and brother, and began making music at a cabin on Crowley’s Ridge.

Lil Cabin emerged as a band and set off on their journey.

“We have visited Maynard, Pocahontas, Walnut Ridge, two locations in Jonesboro, Lake City, Rector, and Monette on a few occasions.” “They want us to return!” According to Ellington.
The band visits nursing and assisted living facilities at no cost, and the responses are truly invaluable.

“I can simply express myself and it makes me feel truly great,” Hufford stated. “They carry all that equipment with them,” remarked Betty Breckenridge, a resident of The Chateau on the Ridge. “That is a task, as those amplifiers and all related equipment are quite heavy.” You understand.

This is Ellington’s unique offering, but not in the manner you might expect.

“The situation was unfavorable.” I experienced a rupture in my colon. “I became septic right away,” Ellington stated. “I was taken into surgery and diagnosed with double pneumonia.” I believe there is a purpose behind my salvation. I do not consider myself a speaker. I cry uncontrollably.

Ellington was on the brink of death. This reflects his gratitude to God for preserving his life.

His mother attends Lil Cabin’s performance, although it’s somewhat more challenging now.

She is 97 years old. She is currently receiving hospice care. “She has a significant mass in her lung,” Ellington’s voice falters, and tears well up in his eyes.

This highlights the importance of playing music through the tears and fully embracing the beautiful harmony he has discovered with his band of brothers.

“What a shock!” A surprise party unfolds as First Community Bank personnel, family members, and Chateau on the Ridge staff enter the room where Ellington is performing with the band.

“In appreciation of the happiness you provide, we wish to express our gratitude.”

“We are excited to inform you that you are the next winner in the Gr8 Acts of Kindness!”
“$300, $400, $405, $406, $407. $408!”

“At First Community Bank, we prioritize our community above all else.” This is truly remarkable. “I understand the significance of this, as my mother resides in assisted living at The Villas,” stated David Daniel, Assistant Vice-President of First Community Bank. “Thank you for your contributions, Dennis.”

“It’s genuinely a gift,” Ellington remarked.
